We have a long history of creating shared value with the communities in which we operate, especially in Dublin and Belfast where our production operations are based. From promoting sustainable agriculture to sourcing local ingredients, we work hard to protect and preserve natural resources and to help local individuals, businesses and communities.

We are committed to reducing any environmental impact across our supply chain.

Our initiatives

  • In 2014 we opened Brewhouse No 4, making St. James’s Gate one of the most environmentally friendly breweries in the world. It was the first major brewery to be awarded LEED Platinum and BREEAM Outstanding ratings.
  • We are committed to reducing waste, energy and water usage through a process of continuous improvement at our brewing, Baileys and packaging sites.

We partnered with our cream supplier Glanbia to develop the ‘sustainable cream initiative’, addressing quality assurance, animal health and welfare, carbon, biodiversity, water and health and safety.

Our results so far

  • We reduced water usage at our brewing operations by 45%, between 2007 and 2015 – equivalent to saving 9 billion litres.
  • We reduced greenhouse gas emissions from brewing activities in Ireland by 26%between 2010 and 2015.
  • We reduced landfilled waste from St. James’s Gate by 94 tonnes, or 91%, between 2010 and 2015.

Building thriving communities

Diageo Ireland is proud of St. James’s Gate’s long history in the heart of Dublin and, thanks to the generosity of the Guinness family, a culture of philanthropy runs through the organisation.

Our initiatives

  • For the past 28 years, the Guinness Brewery Scholarships programme has provided vital support to those who aspire to a third-level education in the Dublin area.
  • The Guinness Enterprise Centre provides the Dublin Business Innovation Centre with a site and a warehouse near our St. James’s Gate complex as well as a cash contribution towards the centre’s development.
  • The Guinness Triathlon is an annual event led and run by Diageo employees and supported by Diageo Ireland to raise funds for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

Our results so far

  • Since 2014, 175 learnershave participated in Learning for Life, our cornerstone training programme.  The programme was rolled out nationwide in 2016. To date we have achieved a 70% success rate of learners kept on in employment or returned to education.
  • 265businesses have graduated through the Guinness Enterprise Centre. 17 companieshave expanded since graduating, with a combined equity investment of €46 million.
  • The Guinness Triathlon raises an average of €24,000each year for much needed equipment for the hospital.
