Alcohol in Society

We are committed to encouraging those adults who choose to drink to make positive and responsible choices about alcohol as well as promoting responsible retailing and tackling the issue of underage drinking.

Our initiatives

We set ourselves ambitious annual targets and are committed to measuring and reporting on every programme that we run.

Over the last five years we have:

  • worked with the Ministries of Health and Secondary Education to educate students on the dangers of underage drinking
  • supported retailers through retailer associations with training on responsible retailing principles
  • partnered with the Ministry of Transport to encourage drivers not to drink and drive.

Our results so far

  • Over 200 commercial bike riders have been trained on the dangers of drink driving and were provided with high visibility jackets.
  • Our partnership with local cab services provider Vairified saw over 4,000 consumers taken home safely during the festive season of 2017.
  • Over 5,000 students in secondary schools in Yaoundé and Douala were educated on the dangers of underage drinking.
  • In the past two years, 2,000 retailers have attended responsible retailing workshops organised in the Littoral and Center Regions.

Innovation – An information revolution

We believe in providing people with the information they need to make informed choices. That’s why we are proud to be the first leading drinks company to implement a comprehensive labelling system, the Diageo Consumer Information Standard (DCIS), which will provide alcohol content and nutritional information, including calories, per serve on all of our products.

Diageo developed the DCIS based on feedback from more than 1,500 consumers around the world, including Guinness Cameroun. The new labels are designed to help people understand what’s in their glass, and underline our commitment to providing people with the information they need to make decisions about drinking as part of a balanced lifestyle.
